Your Fractional CMO or Hands-On Head of Growth
I'm Patric Sawada, founder of Silkdrive. European and East-Asian companies bring me in 1-3 days a week to own marketing strategy, manage their agencies, and report pipeline instead of activity. Senior growth leadership without the €200K+ cost of a full-time VP Marketing.
When Marketing Leadership Is Missing
Growing companies hit a ceiling when nobody owns the marketing strategy. These are the symptoms I get called in for.
Marketing Team, No Marketing Leader
You have 2-5 marketers running campaigns, but nobody setting the strategy. Each person optimizes their channel in isolation. Nobody owns pipeline, and the CEO ends up making marketing decisions by gut.
Agencies Without Accountability
Your performance agency sends monthly reports but nobody challenges the numbers or connects them to revenue. Briefs are vague, KPIs drift, and you cannot tell whether €10K/month in agency fees is generating pipeline or just activity.
No Repeatable Growth Model
Every quarter starts from scratch. There is no experiment backlog, no funnel model, and no shared dashboard that tells leadership which channels actually convert. Marketing feels busy but unpredictable.
International Expansion on Autopilot
You launched in Germany with the same English messaging that worked in the Netherlands. Conversion rates are a third of your home market and nobody knows why. Cultural context is missing from every brief.

Which Shape Fits Your Company
Advisor, head of growth, or fractional CMO: the right label depends on your size, your leadership, and your goals. We settle it in the first call.
External Growth Advisor
You already have a marketing lead or a COO who owns marketing. I work alongside them: auditing channels, challenging agency reports, running technical deep-dives, and raising the topics an insider cannot. I advised a Belgian telecom this way for two years, reporting to the COO.
Embedded Head of Growth
You have 2-5 marketers and one or two agencies, but nobody owns pipeline. I embed 2-3 days a week, set the strategy, run the standups, brief the agencies, and coach your team. Strategy in the morning, campaign work in the afternoon.
Fractional CMO
You need the full marketing remit owned at leadership level: budget, positioning, team, agencies, and board reporting, on a part-time footing. We agree scope and decision rights up front, so the title matches the mandate.
How an Engagement Works
Three phases from first conversation to embedded execution.
Discovery & Audit (2-4 Weeks)
Deep dive into your current marketing, sales pipeline, competitive landscape, and team capabilities. Stakeholder interviews, data analysis, and a clear picture of where you stand.
Strategy & Roadmap (1-2 Months)
Prioritized growth roadmap with quick wins and long-term plays. Agency briefings, channel strategy, KPI framework, and budget allocation, all aligned to your revenue targets.
Embedded Execution (Ongoing)
Regular weekly presence in your team. Running standups, managing agencies, reviewing performance, coaching team members, and iterating on strategy based on real results.

What a Fractional CMO Actually Does (and When You Need One)
A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who embeds in your company part-time, usually 1-3 days per week, and owns marketing strategy, agency management, and pipeline reporting during that time. The role is owned, not advisory: decision rights, KPIs, and accountability are agreed up front. Most European engagements run €4,000-15,000 per month depending on days per week, with a 3-month minimum.
The shape I know best sits one step to the side of that title. For two years I was the external growth advisor to a Belgian telecom's marketing team, reporting to the COO. Below him sat a marketing manager, a content marketer, and an external performance agency. My work covered strategy, experiments, systems, channel tactics, and agency performance, with a weekly report that kept everyone honest about the numbers. Nobody there needed a new CMO. They needed someone outside the org chart who could challenge the work.
That is why I do not push the CMO title. Whether you need a fractional CMO, an embedded head of growth, or an external advisor depends on your size, your leadership, and your goals. A 20-person company with a strong COO needs a challenger, not a chief. A 60-person scale-up with three marketers and two agencies usually needs an owner. We settle the shape in the first call, and the pricing above covers all three.
The edge I bring that most fractional CMOs do not: 12+ years running campaigns across European and East-Asian markets, and the ADAPT framework for adapting creative between cultures. If you are expanding from the EU into Asia, or the other way around, the same person owns the strategy on both sides instead of losing the cultural context in a hand-off.
