The unit of optimisation in AEO is not the page. It is the sentence or paragraph that answers a specific user question, plus the surrounding schema markup that makes it machine-extractable. A page can have dozens of AEO-optimised answers if it covers dozens of related questions; conversely, a long unstructured essay on the same topic might have zero AEO surface area despite being substantively excellent.

The mechanics break down into three layers. First, the question itself must be addressable, the page needs to contain a section that maps to the user's likely query phrasing. Second, the answer must be extractable, short paragraphs, declarative sentences, no embedded conditional logic that breaks when isolated. Third, the structural signals must be present, proper H2 question headings, FAQ schema where appropriate, Article schema with current dateModified, and a meta description that mirrors the answer.

How Google AI Overviews pick their sources

Google has not published a complete ranking algorithm for AI Overviews, but their public statements and observed behaviour suggest a layered system. The Overview generation runs on top of the standard organic ranking, pages must rank reasonably well to be candidates. Among the candidates, the system favours pages with clear answer structures, recent dateModified timestamps, and primary-source citations. Schema-rich pages appear disproportionately often in Overviews compared to their share of organic top-10 placement, suggesting schema markup is a meaningful factor.

The volatility is high. Pages can appear in AI Overviews one week and disappear the next as Google iterates the system. Treating AEO as a one-time optimisation is wrong; treating it as an ongoing maintenance discipline (refresh dateModified, watch which queries you appear for in Search Console's new "AI Overview" filter, iterate the answer paragraphs) is right.

Bing Copilot weighs different signals from Google. Bing has historically been more receptive to medium-authority sites with strong topical depth than Google has, and that pattern carries over into Copilot citations. For European B2B with under-the-radar domain authority, Bing Copilot is sometimes the easier first AEO win.

Voice search adds length constraints, answers under 30 words have a structural advantage because that is the practical limit of a useful voice answer. Restructuring a 200-word paragraph into a 25-word lead followed by elaboration helps both voice extraction and quick-scan reading.

Featured snippets, the pre-AI-Overview answer panels, predate AEO but use overlapping mechanics. Pages that earned featured snippets between 2019 and 2024 disproportionately get cited in AI Overviews now, because the on-page treatment that earned snippets (clear question headings, short answer paragraphs, schema) is the same treatment that earns Overview citations. Past snippet investment is not wasted.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the discipline of being cited in long-form responses generated by large language models. It overlaps with AEO but optimises for a different surface: the body of an LLM's answer, where citations may or may not be visible to the user, rather than a structured panel above search results.

The unit of optimisation in GEO is the passage, a span of two to five sentences that an LLM can quote, paraphrase, or use as the factual basis of its answer. The page that contains the passage matters less than the quality, recency, and citability of the passage itself.

GEO has two distinct mechanics depending on whether the LLM is using its training set or live retrieval.

Training-set visibility versus retrieval-time citation

LLMs trained on a static corpus include whatever public web content existed at training time. Once a model has trained, you cannot insert new content into its training set, the GEO opportunity for that model is fixed. The implication is that quality content shipped now matters for the next training cycle, not the current one. There is a long lag.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is the controllable layer. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude with web search, and Gemini with grounding all retrieve live web content at query time. They use traditional ranking signals (close to but not identical to Google's) to identify candidate sources, then use the LLM to synthesise an answer with citations. The optimisation discipline is similar to AEO: clear answers to specific questions, schema markup, primary-source citations. Domain authority matters but counts for less than it does in classic SEO.

The practical posture is to optimise primarily for retrieval-time citation today, which gives you measurable feedback loops, while writing quality content that will compound into training-set presence on a 12–24 month delay.

Why domain authority matters less for GEO

Classic SEO weighs domain authority heavily, sites with strong backlink profiles outrank smaller sites even when the smaller site has the better answer. GEO does not work this way. LLMs prioritise answer quality, factual density, and citability. A small B2B site with a precisely-written passage on a niche question routinely outranks a large generalist site with a vague answer on the same query.

This is why niche B2B sites are unusually competitive in GEO. The structural disadvantages they face in classic SEO, limited backlinks, narrow topic surface, modest publication frequency, are mostly neutralised. The advantages they have, depth of expertise, willingness to take a position, primary research, count for more.

For European B2B specifically, this is the high-use angle. A European B2B SaaS company will not outrank Forbes for "what is fractional CMO." It can absolutely be the cited source in Perplexity's answer for "fractional CMO pricing in Europe 2026", provided the page does the AEO/GEO work.

1. Add an FAQ block to every page that targets a question keyword

Every page with a clear primary question should end with an FAQ block of six to ten Q&A pairs covering the most-likely follow-up questions. Each FAQ pair is a candidate for separate AI Overview or LLM citation. Emit FAQPage JSON-LD that mirrors the visible content exactly. Google penalises mismatches between visible FAQ and schema.

2. Lead with the answer in the first sentence after the H1

The "answer-first paragraph" pattern: state the direct answer to the page's primary question in the first sentence under the H1, before any introduction or context. Then elaborate. AI Overviews and LLM retrievers preferentially extract the leading sentence. Burying the answer in paragraph three costs you the citation.

This violates traditional editorial conventions that lead with a hook or scene-setter. AEO and editorial pleasure are in tension here. AEO wins for B2B informational pages.

3. Use H2 questions, not H2 keywords

"What is AEO?" outperforms "AEO benefits" as an H2 because it matches the user's likely query phrasing. Question-form headings are extracted more often in answer panels and produce better LLM retrieval matches.

4. Emit Article schema with author, datePublished, dateModified, wordCount

Article (or BlogPosting) schema with all four fields populated is a stronger signal than the same content without schema. The dateModified field is particularly important. AI Overviews favour recent content for time-sensitive queries, and many sites set dateModified once and never update it, which hurts ranking durability.

5. Cite primary sources with explicit URLs

LLM retrievers and AI Overviews weight content that itself cites primary sources. A page making numerical claims with explicit citations to JETRO, the European Commission, StatCounter, or peer-reviewed research outranks the same claims without citation. The citation density signals reliability to the LLM.

This is also a content-quality investment that pays back independently, readers trust cited claims more than uncited ones, and you avoid the slow erosion of credibility that happens when readers spot uncited assertions.

6. Use short paragraphs (2–4 sentences max)

Long paragraphs are less extractable. AI surfaces prefer to quote a self-contained 2–4 sentence span over a 200-word block. The discipline of short paragraphs forces structural clarity that benefits classic SEO too, readers scan more easily, dwell time goes up, exits drop.

7. Use labelled data tables, not screenshots of tables

A markdown or HTML table with header rows and labelled cells is machine-readable. A screenshot of the same table is not. Tables in AI Overviews and LLM answers come from text-based tables; screenshots are invisible to the retriever.

This applies equally to comparison charts, pricing tables, and feature matrices. If the table has SEO value, render it in HTML, not as an image.

8. Include a TL;DR summary at the top

A four-bullet summary at the top of the page, under the H1, gives AI surfaces a pre-extracted answer for the page's primary topic. This post does it. The TL;DR is often what gets cited in voice search and AI Overview short answers, while the full content gets cited in longer LLM responses.

9. Maintain dateModified rigorously

Update dateModified whenever you make substantive changes to the page. Do not update it for typo fixes or formatting tweaks. Google detects gratuitous date manipulation and penalises it. Do update it when you add a new section, refresh statistics, or revise the FAQ block. Pages with stale dateModified lose AI Overview placement to fresher competitors.

10. Submit your sitemap to IndexNow

IndexNow speeds up indexing of new and updated pages on Bing and Yandex (and indirectly improves Bing Copilot citation latency). Google does not currently use IndexNow but reviews the protocol periodically. The implementation cost is one or two hours; the marginal benefit is small but real for high-velocity content sites.

How AEO + GEO differ for European companies

EU-specific considerations that change the optimal investment shape.

The multi-language AEO stack

Google AI Overviews and LLMs respond in the user's query language. If a German B2B buyer searches "Was ist GEO?" the answer comes from German-language sources. Your English page does not surface, no matter how well optimised, hreflang tags help with classic SEO but do not translate the AEO panel.

The implication is that each language gets its own AEO investment. Auto-translating an English FAQ block into German produces a page that is technically present but qualitatively weak. German-language LLMs detect machine translation, especially in technical answer text, and rank it below natively-written content. The investment per language is real, but the return per language is also real because per-language competition is thinner.

The practical sequencing for a European B2B company: ship the English version first, observe which queries earn AI Overview placement in EN, then port the highest-use 5–10 pages to your top one or two non-English markets with proper native-language treatment. Do not auto-translate.

When EU GDPR constraints help your AEO game

A counter-intuitive observation. GDPR limits competitor behavioural targeting and reduces the weight of behaviour-based ranking signals across the EU search market. Google's ranking systems still function, but the technical-signal weight in the overall mix is relatively higher in EU markets than in US ones.

For European B2B teams that invest in proper schema, structured content, and primary-source citation, this is good news, your investment compounds at a higher rate than the equivalent investment would in a US market saturated with behavioural signal.

It is not a reason to skip behavioural optimisation entirely. It is a reason to weight technical AEO investment higher than US-centric advice typically suggests.

EU LLM uptake by industry varies

Self-reported survey data and behavioural data do not always agree on EU LLM adoption rates by industry. Stuffing every page with FAQ blocks regardless of question fit. FAQ blocks should answer questions the user actually asks for that page topic. Generic FAQ blocks ("What is your return policy?" on a B2B SaaS pricing page) hurt AEO because Google's quality systems detect the mismatch.

Ignoring dateModified. The single most common error. Set once at publication, never updated. Pages with dateModified more than 18 months old systematically lose AI Overview placement to fresher competitors regardless of content quality.

Treating GEO as "just SEO." It is not. The mechanics differ, passage extractability, citation density, author byline weight, and a generalist SEO audit will miss the specific GEO levers. Either learn the discipline or hire someone who knows it.

Optimising for ChatGPT 4 when the buyer uses Perplexity. Self-report data is unreliable on which AI surface a buyer uses. Browser extension panels (SimilarWeb, SparkToro) and your own Search Console / GA4 referral data are more honest. Optimise for the surfaces your buyers actually use, which is rarely the one the marketing team thinks they use.

How to measure AEO + GEO performance

The KPIs that matter, in priority order.

AI Overview appearance count. Google Search Console added an AI Overview filter in 2024. Use the filter to see which queries surface your pages in Overviews and how often. This is the single best signal for AEO progress.

Branded search volume lift. Branded search is the proxy for AI-mediated awareness. If branded queries rise without a corresponding paid-media or PR campaign, AI surfaces are likely citing you. Compare quarter-over-quarter, not week-over-week, branded search volume is too noisy at weekly resolution.

Perplexity / ChatGPT referral traffic in GA4. Set up referral tracking for perplexity.ai and chat.openai.com. The volumes are still small in 2026 but rising; tracking them is the first step to optimising for them.

Manual sampling of 20 query variants per quarter. Pick the 20 most strategically important queries for your business. Manually run them in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Claude. Note whether your site is cited. Track quarter-over-quarter. Tools like Profound, Otterly, and SE Ranking AI Visibility automate this; manual is fine for under 50 queries.

Search Console position decline despite AI Overview gain. A counter-intuitive but increasingly common pattern. Average position drops because AI Overviews steal clicks from rank-1 organic results. Final thoughts

AEO and GEO are not replacements for SEO. They are the layer on top of SEO that captures the value classic SEO is losing as AI surfaces absorb informational queries.

For European B2B specifically, the investment ratio matters. AEO and GEO are higher-use per euro spent than they are for US consumer brands, because deal sizes are larger, research cycles are longer, and per-language competition is thinner.
